The likely candidate of the Congress for Virudhunagar Parliamentary constituency, B. Manicka Tagore, who is also the sitting MP, flayed the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government for its attempt to release the convicts in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Commencing his election campaign from Sri Subramania Swamy Temple at Tirupparankundram here on Sunday, he said the election was aimed at seeking justice for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, who promised to take India to the 21st century through industrialisation.

“The Supreme Court has stayed the AIADMK government’s announcement on the release of the assassins. Do we need a government that is trying to let off assassins?” he asked.

Referring to the gang-rape and murder of a woman employee of an IT company near Chennai, Mr.Tagore said the law and order situation had deteriorated in Tamil Nadu.

No safety

Referring to the ‘bomb’ blasts in Madurai district, he said there was a lack of safety for the people.

“There is no security for women in the State which was ruled by a woman Chief Minister,” he noted.

He also flayed Ms.Jayalalithaa for making “irresponsible” statements by claiming credit for her government for all the achievements and blaming the Central government for all the failures such as increased power cuts, rising unemployment and prices of essential commodities.

He said the Lok Sabha election was not a fight among political parties but a challenge between the good and the evil, the secular and the communal. “Ms.Jayalalithaa’s dream of becoming the Prime Minister will not turn into reality. Congress leader Rahul will become the next Prime Minister,” he said.

District Congress presidents Sethuraman (Madurai urban), Velayutham (Virudhunagar) and Peraiyur Town panchayat chairman K.K. Gurusamy accompanied Mr. Tagore.
