A four-member gang attacked All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MLA M. Gunasekaran near Aathu Paalam in Manamaduai on Friday evening following a dispute over removal of encroachments in the area.

He was talking with his friends at Soman Gas Agency near the Anna statue when D. Logesh (22), son of a former office-bearer of the ruling party, and his friends attacked him, police said.

Mr. Gunasekaran suffered cut injuries on his head, forehead, shoulder and back, while his friends Somanathan and Arumugam, who tried to protect him, suffered minor injuries.

After first aid at the local Government Hospital, Mr. Gunasekaran was referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, police said.

Logesh was arguing with Mr. Gunasekaran as to why he failed to protect his building in the drive against encroachments six months ago. Soon a wordy duel broke out when the power suddenly went off. Logesh and his friends came back with sickles and attacked Mr. Gunasekaran and his friends, police said.

Superintendent of Police Ashwin M.Kotnis said the real motive behind the attack could be ascertained only after the accused are arrested.
