A man was brutally murdered by a moneylender in Avaniapuram here on Monday night.

According to police, the victim, Valampurinathan (35), an electrician of Sundararaman Street in Avaniapuram, had borrowed Rs.10,000 from Vijayapandi (26) of the same locality a few days ago. It is alleged that despite settlement of the amount, Vijayapandi allegedly kept harassing Valampurinathan demanding interest.

Vijayapandi (27) and three others – Rajachandran (26), Agni (26), and Davamani – went to the house of Valampurinathan on Monday and picked a quarrel with him. Following a heated exchange of words, the suspect slit the throat of the victim in the presence of his father and escaped.

Valampurinathan died on the spot.

Based on a complaint from the victim’s father, Avaniapuram police registered a case of murder and arrested Vijayapandi, Agni and Rajachandran. Davamani is absconding.
