A young lawyer was brutally murdered by an armed gang in full public view in the busy Munichalai area here on Monday noon.

According to police, the victim, Rafiq, son of A.K. Mydeen of Ismailpuram Fourth Street, was going towards his house along with his friends at around 1.30 p.m. Suddenly, they noticed a five-member gang on the other end of the road.

Apprehending trouble, Rafiq attempted to flee from the spot, but the gang pounced on him and attacked him with deadly weapons. Shops in the area downed shutters and the road wore a deserted look.

On information, a police team rushed to the spot where Rafiq was lying dead in a pool of blood. The body was shifted to Government Rajaji Hospital. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the deceased had an illegal intimacy with a married woman, and that could have been the reason for his murder.

The police officers suspected the hand of one Sheikh Thambi, Azharudin and three others in the crime. The police seized three weapons hidden near the scene of crime.

Based on information obtained during interrogation of a few persons, the police said Rafiq had an illegal affair with the wife of one of the suspects. The deceased, who had studied law from a college in Bangalore, had been practising in New Delhi for the last two years. He reportedly returned from New Delhi a few days ago.

Vilakkathoon police have registered a case.

The police said Rafiq’s father Mydeen, an AIADMK member, was a real estate agent. Some of the residents in Ismailpuram Fourth Street, who knew of Rafiq’s family, said Rafiq was in close contact with the associates of slain terrorist Imam Ali.

Only about 45 days back, one Mannar Moideen was done to death by some persons in the same locality in Munichalai.
