Innovative showpieces and decorative items fashioned out of recycled plastic waste took the centre stage at an exhibition organised at Fatima College.
The third-year students of the college said that since they had been asked to take up the cause of recycling plastic for their extension activities, they had undertaken a number of initiatives to collect plastic waste from the city. “Students from every department selected a locality, went there and urged the residents to segregate the waste. We gave them a paper cover and asked them to collect plastic waste for a week and hand it over to us,” said K. Kaveri, a final-year BCA student.
Plastic cups, CDs, plastic covers, bottles, caps and other materials had been recycled into letter and cell phone holders, newspaper stands and decorative items. “We observed that most of the plastic waste generated at the households were plastic covers, snacks wrappers and packets,” said R. Anitha from the IT Department. Among the innovations on display was a flower pot fashioned from the outer layer of a vehicle battery which had been emptied out. “I filled soil into it and created a water system using half a plastic bottle and broken plastic pens,” explained M. Suganthi from the Computer Science Department.
Speaking at the valedictory session, R. Vasudevan, Dean, Extra-curricular Activities, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, said that there was a need to keep in check plastic waste rather than converting it into useful items.
