A section of lawyers practising in the Madras High Court Bench here boycotted court proceedings on Tuesday and took out a motor rally till the District Court campus demanding introduction of Tamil as one of the official languages of the High Court.

G. Bhagavath Singh, who has been on a fast inside the court buildings for long pressing the same demand, said that speedy introduction of Tamil in High Court would be a boon to a majority of lawyers who were unable to exhibit their legal acumen due to lack of English language skills.

He claimed that over 90 per cent of lawyers in the State had acquired law degrees by writing their examinations in Tamil.

These advocates were forced to confine their practice to District Courts and engage other English speaking lawyers to argue the cases of their clients in the High Court.
