A major fire at the Anuppanadi substation of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) damaged a transformer and caused a temporary power outage in areas around the sub-station here on Saturday.

Fire tenders rushed to the spot after they received a call from the TANGEDCO officials at the substation at 11.10 a.m., when the fire was detected.

While six fire engines initially rushed to the spot, more than 15 vehicles and a team of firemen led by District Fire Officer P. Saravana Kumar battled to put out the fire which raged on for two hours.

TANGEDCO officials said that the cause of the fire was owing to leakage in the ‘cooling oil’ used in the transformer as a coolant. As the transformer had 40,000 kilo litres of oil, the fire fighters had a tough time.
