Don’t burn wastes

Though non-decomposable waste is collected at every doorstep on Wednesdays by conservancy workers of Tirunelveli Municipal Corporation, the other waste collected by them on other days is burnt on roadside to reduce the weight of the garbage they have to carry to the storing bins at different places from where this will be carried away by Corporation lorry. This happens at most of the places in Palayamkottai, especially on the Seevalaperi roadside.

I request that the Corporation sweepers must be strictly instructed not to burn the waste which is not only polluting the air but a

lso hazardous to the people.

NEET

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) was introduced all over India to prevent alleged corruption in medical entrance tests conducted by private colleges. It is known that a large amount of money is being collected by unscrupulous private colleges resulting in production of inefficient doctors.

Considering all these, the Supreme Court has upheld the NEET. But efforts are made by State governments to bypass the Supreme Court’s ruling by passing a State legislation. Especially students from the rural Tamil Nadu are really disappointed over the inordinate delay. Hence, exemptions may be considered for a year or two so that ample time is given for preparing for this All India Competitive Examination.

Hold book fair

Book fairs were conducted on a grand scale in 2013 and 2014 at Palayamkottai which benefitted voracious readers of Tirunelveli. Though a book fair was conducted by some individuals in December 2016, the stalls were less.

The district administration may initiate steps to conduct a mega book fair with a good number of book stalls. If it was conducted during the forthcoming summer holidays, it will attract a large number of visitors.

Protect Tamiraparani

The Tamiraparani is the lifeline of Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts. A disturbing fact is that this river has long been misused by numerous bad elements in terms of sand mining and exploitation of the water.

Against many odds, the Tamiraparani flows with all grace. It is the responsibility of the Tamil Nadu government and the other authorities to protect the Tamiraparani, apart from taking strict action against plunderers of the river.

Utilise vacant space

Opposite the main entrance to Tirunelveli railway junction near the taxi stand, there is a railway land and people use this open area for urinating even though there is a pay-and-use toilet run by the Municipal Corporation a few meters away.

Tourist buses that are parked nearby make it convenient for the bus travellers to ease themselves in this area. As a result, there is a nauseating smell around the place, causing hardship to passengers coming out of the station as well as those crossing the place.

The vacant space may either be fenced or allotted for two-wheeler parking area. The existing two-wheeler parking zone on the southern side of the station is always full and the vehicles are parked in open space as there is not enough space in the building. Will the railways do the needful?

Repair borewells

Almost on every Monday, people with empty pots from villages and towns throng Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi Collectorates demanding supply of drinking water. Since monsoon has failed this year, there will be an acute drinking water shortage in the southern districts.

To overcome this critical situation, the government is taking steps to maintain the waterbodies in all the districts. Also the officials of the local bodies may make effort to repair borewells and electric motors to ensure water supply.

Create awareness

This has reference to the news “Notice served on 40 households to clear mosquito breeding sources“ ( The Hindu, March 15). Dengue fever is prevalent in Tuticorin and swine flu has caused one or two fatalities. It may be intriguing for health authorities that dengue is spreading at a time of water scarcity.

February is the month when swine flu peaks due to the cold condition. Creating awareness of swine infection should be taken on a war footing. When swine flu starts manifesting, even the educated is of the opinion that they are having a common cold and the treatment gets delayed.

Hand sanitisers should be placed in all public places such as marriage halls, cinema theatres, banks and offices. Handbills must be posted on do’s and don’ts. City buses should be fumigated once in a fortnight till the threat is over.
