Members of the Mahila Morcha, the women’s wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated ‘Raksha Bandan’ by tying ‘rakhis’ to naval personnel at the Naval detachment at Thondi in the district on Thursday.
Led by BJP Mahila Morcha State deputy secretary Rajeswari and BJP District president K. Muraleedharan, the BJP women volunteers tied ‘rakhis,’ symbolising their love to their brothers and exchanging sweets and pleasantries.
“We prayed for the well being of the naval personnel and the men in white pledged to protect us,” said Ms. Rajeswari. This was an occasion to pay their gratitude to the men and officers, who protected the people of the country, Athma Karthik, BJP district secretary said.
In another event, girl students of Chettinad Public School, Karaikudi celebrated Raksha Bandan by tying ‘rakhis’ to the men at the 4th Reserve battalion of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Amaravathipudur in Sivaganga district.
The students presented cultural events to the delight of the CISF men and the latter demonstrated use of weapons, including the AK47. Addressing the event, Commandant Shanti Jaidev stressed the need for brotherhood, religious tolerance and unity for a better tomorrow. Visits to such defence establishments and students’ interaction with the personnel should kindle spirit of patriotism in the minds of the students and motivate them to join the defence forces, she said. Kumar Shivendra, Assistant Commandant, SP Kumaresan, Chairman and Ramesh, Principal of Chettinad School were present on the occasion.
