Besides the float festival and Chithirai Tiruvizha, people of Madurai will have yet another festival to look forward to every year. Madurai too will have annual celebrations henceforth to commemorate its culture, heritage and history.
The first edition of ‘Maa Madurai Potruvom’ (Celebrate Madurai), an annual festival to be launched in Madurai this year, is scheduled for February 8, 9 and 10. Marathon, symposium, workshop, carnival and heritage tour will form part of the celebration organised by a committee of citizens led by T. Kannan, Fit Person, Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, in association with the district administration and Madurai Corporation.
The objective of the event, according to official sources, is to make people aware of Madurai’s rich tradition, heritage and culture and is organised with the involvement of people from various sections of society. The event is supported by Collector Anshul Mishra, Mayor V. V. Rajan Chellappa and Corporation Commissioner R. Nanthagopal.
Competitions will be conducted for school and college students ahead of the celebrations.
Each day of the main event is dedicated to a theme. The first day will have ‘celebrate Madurai,’ the second day ‘celebrate its history, tradition and antiquity’ and the third day ‘celebrate the Vaigai.’ Madurai, which ranks among the oldest cities in India, is believed to be more than 3000 years old. The celebration is expected to provide useful insights into the days of yore of Madurai, which is considered the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu.
