On the eve of Raksha Bandhan day, the district police have renewed their responsibility to protect women from crime against them.
At a Raksha Bandhan celebration organised by two colleges at Tirupparankundram here on Tuesday, the district police personnel, led by Superintendent of Police V.Balakrishnan, gave key chains, bearing the phone number of Sub-Inspector of Police of their area, to the girl students of the colleges.
This was the gift given to the students of Mannar Tirumalai Nayakar College and Sermathai Vasan College for Women in return for the rakhis they tied to the wrists of the police personnel.“Often the people panic during emergency situations and forget the phone numbers of the police, and they fail to call up even 100 (police control room). The key chains will serve as a reminder for the girls to alert the police during emergencies,” the SP said. He said the Raksha Bandhan marked the strengthening of responsibility of the police — from being friends to brothers — in protecting women.
A private cell phone company has come forward to distribute its SIM cards to girls, where the phone numbers of the local Sub-Inspectors of Police would be stored against the emergency call number.
