With 93.19 per cent of the 37,437 Plus Two students clearing the examination in Madurai, the district has recorded a marginal improvement of 0.32 per cent, compared to the previous year.

The marginal increase has also helped the district in moving up the ladder in its ranking.

While the district came 16th in Tamil Nadu in pass percentage last year, this year it moved to the 15th rank.

As it has been the trend, girls outnumbered boys in pass percentage in the district this year as well.

Of the 286 schools, 81 achieved 100 per cent pass. Six of them were government schools and 56 were self-financing matriculation schools.

Among the three educational districts, Usilampatti and Madurai showed an improvement compared to last year while Melur declined in pass percentage by 0.85.

Though the number of students scoring centum in major subjects increased this year, the centum scorers were mainly in Accountancy and Commerce.

Number of centum scorers in Mathematics came down by about 50 per cent from 301 in 2015 to 158 in 2016.

Mathematics also contributed significantly to students failing in the examination with 412 of the 2,550 failed students failing in Mathematics.

There were no centum scorers in Physics this year in Madurai district as opposed to one student scoring centum in the subject last year.
