Madurai Kamaraj University students revive stir

January 22, 2014 11:31 am | Updated November 16, 2021 06:46 pm IST - MADURAI:

A section of Madurai Kamaraj University students revived their protests against its Vice-Chancellor Kalyani Mathivanan by staging a demonstration near Keezhakuyilkudi bus stop at Nagamalai Pudukottai near here on Tuesday.

They had been demanding revocation of punitive action against three research scholars, two faculty members and one non-teaching staff. One of the three research scholars J. Arun said that the students actually wanted to hold the demonstration in front of the university. But the police denied permission. Hence, the venue was shifted to Keezhakuyilkudi bus stop and permission was sought for holding the demonstration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Despite a specific plea, the police objected to erection of a makeshift roof near the protest venue and gave us permission only from 12 noon to 3 p.m.,” he said. The students planned to observe a fast on Wednesday, the 51 day of their protest.
