Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), which had invited applications from eligible candidates to fill up the 176 clerk post vacancies in the varsity, has seen a good response.

Already 13,000 applications have been received and many more are still to be collected from the university’s administration section and post offices. “By the time the final count is over, the applications received will be 10 times more than the number of vacancies. We are yet to open several boxes where the applications were dropped by eligible candidates and it is told that a huge volume is lying in the post office,” a senior official told The Hindu here on Saturday.

After a gap of nearly a decade, the university authorities have initiated steps to fill up the 176 sanctioned clerk posts and the last date to apply was over on December 28. Along with 176 clerical vacancies, the university is recruiting another 35 employees in the category of sweeper, watchman and gardener.

After collecting all the applications, the establishment section of MKU will begin scrutinising and sorting them out community-wise. “There is response from across the State since these are permanent posts on government pay scale. The Registrar’s office in our university is flooded with applications and it will take at least two weeks to arrange them in order since it has to be done manually,” an official said.

A few days back, MKU Vice-Chancellor Kalyani Mathivanan had said that recruitment of non-teaching staff in clerical cadre is an urgent requirement since the varsity’s administrative work suffered for want of manpower. For the post of clerk, the qualification needed for candidates was any degree with working knowledge of MS Office.

The community-wise vacancy position for 176 clerk posts was: OC category (53), BC (45), MBC(34), BC-Muslim (6), SC(26), ST(2), SC-Arunthathiar (5) and Differently-abled (5).

Meanwhile, the Syndicate meeting of MKU is scheduled to take place on January 9 and it is expected that the selection of candidates for clerk posts would be taken up after that meet.
