Dementia is a progressive disorder and if not diagnosed early, it will become chronic, according to N. Mohan, Dean, Madurai Medical College .
Inaugurating a memory clinic, a first of its kind for the city, on Sunday, he said, “This disorder, prevalent among old people and even youngsters these days, show signs of it owing to the stressful lifestyle they lead,” he pointed out. Mr. N. Mohan said that a separate memory clinic wing would be set up at the Government Rajaji Hospital to serve dementia patients. Dementia was a dreadful disease caused by various factors such as hypertension, stress, diabetes and obesity, he said.
C. Ramasubramanian, State Nodal Officer said, “In India 43.3 percent of the old people suffer from mental health problems. Dementia and mood disorders, particularly depression, are common.” “Our aim is to create awareness among the public about the mental disorder, said K. Vigneshwaran, clinical psychologist.
“The earlier it is detected the faster it can be cured,” he added.
