Madurai Corporation sets Rs.41-crore tax collection target in zone-2

December 17, 2014 09:08 am | Updated 09:08 am IST - MADURAI:

The Madurai Corporation zone-2 has set a target of Rs.41-crore tax collection from wards falling under its jurisdiction.

For 2014-15, collection of estimated taxes for different utility services is being given momentum and a checking mechanism has been put in place to ensure that there is no default.

A. Palanisamy, Assistant Commissioner, Zone-2, told The Hindu on Tuesday that 68 per cent of the target amount had already been collected thanks to a stepped-up campaign for tax compliance.

“Our target is to achieve 95 per cent tax collection by March,” he said. The Corporation collects taxes under four heads — water tax, house tax, professional tax and drainage tax. Of these, house tax forms the major chunk, coming to around Rs.21 crore.

Zone-2 covers 26 wards, including the 10 added recently.

Unused bus shelters to go

Mr. Palanisamy said that the Corporation would soon remove unused bus shelters identified at different places. “Public are not using some bus shelters and some have been damaged. At least 10 unused bus shelters will be removed,” he said.

The Assistant Commissioner said that special focus was being given to removal of encroachments and unauthorised shops in zone-2.

While the focus is now on Mattuthavani bus stand, removal of encroachments upon the Panagal Road, from Government Rajaji Hospital to the Collectorate, will be taken up next.
