Corporation Commissioner R.Nanthagopal inspected a few road works in the city on Monday.
According to an official, the Commissioner visited Subramania Pillai Street in S.S.Colony where a metal road is being laid at a cost of Rs.40.50 lakh. At Ponmeni in ward 19, he inspected a road being re-laid at a cost of Rs.53 lakh, and a new road being laid at Pooman Nagar in ward 1 at an estimate of Rs.11.75 lakh.
He instructed the engineers to take samples of the tar mix and send them to testing laboratories. He warned that stern action would be taken against the contractors if it was found that substandard materials were used.
Later, Mr.Nanthagopal inspected the work for laying of a service lane along the Bypass Road from Big Bazaar to Ellis Nagar at a cost of Rs.30 lakh, and directed the officials and contractors to expedite the work. With several shops and commercial establishments having sprung up on both sides of the Bypass Road, the need for the service lane had become essential.
As the stretch was bumpy, vehicle users had made repeated representations to the authorities to lay the road.
The work, when completed, is expected to ease traffic on the busy Bypass Road and ensure utilisation of the total stretch of the service lane, the Commissioner said.
With multi-storey buildings mushrooming on the Bypass Road area, the Corporation had been collecting huge amounts of property tax from them. However, there were problems in fixing the tax rates due to various reasons.
When the officials fixed property tax on revised building plan, there were objections from the property owners.
The Corporation authorities have assured to look into them on a case-by-case basis after inspection.
