Madurai Corporation has purchased two new suction lorries –each cost Rs.30 lakh – for drainage cleaning to meet the increasing demand from the growing city.

Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa flagged off the lorries at corporation lorry shed at Sellur on Sunday in the presence of Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan, City Engineer A. Mathuram and senior officials.

Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said the corporation already had two drainage suction vehicles and they were being used for the 72 old wards in the city. Since the corporation now had 100 wards after the inclusion of extension areas, the requirement for two more additional suction lorries was felt strongly.

The corporation had also purchased a new ambulance at a cost of Rs.7.5 lakh to be used for its maternity care centres in the city.
