Madurai clean drive fetches Rs.11,750 as fine

Officials of the Madurai Corporation slapped a total fine of Rs.11,750 on the people who had not disposed of the waste in the dumper bins here on Saturday.

In a drive carried out to check whether the residents and hoteliers among others falling in the commercial establishment category dropped the garbage in bins installed in their locality, it was found that there were violations.

Commissioner R.Nanthagopal had formed teams comprising health and town and country planning officials in the all the zones. In Kalavasal, Villapuram, Thiruparankundram and a few other places, people were spotted disposing of garbage in unauthorised public spaces, thus causing pollution in the surroundings. For the first time offenders, a spot fine of Rs.500 was slapped, while it was Rs.1,000 for repeat offenders.

According to the officials, many small and roadside restaurants that had disposed of the waste on the roads were fined.
