It will have jurisdiction over annexed Corporation areas

The jurisdiction of Madurai City police has become coterminus with the Madurai Corporation with effect from December 10, 2013.

A Government Order (4D) No.124 to this effect was issued by Home Secretary Nirajan Mardi. The GO said Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had announced at the police officers’ conference held in Chennai on December 19, 2012, that the jurisdiction of the Madurai City police would be made coterminous with the municipal corporation in Madurai.

Based on the announcement, a proposal was sent by the Director General of Police and it was accepted by the government, the G.O. said. The Corporation, with a jurisdiction of 72 wards, was expanded to house 100 wards by annexing three municipalities of Avaniapuram, Tirupparankundram and Anaiyur; three town panchayats of Harveypatti, Tirunagar and Vilangudi; and 11 village panchayats. The expansion exercise coincided with the 2011 local body elections. However, the expansion of city police jurisdiction was not effected immediately.

The areas under Tirupparankundram police stations will come into the city limits. However, the jurisdiction of other police stations such as Koodal Pudur, Oomachikulam, Othakadai, Karuppayoorani, Silaiman, Avaniapuram and Tirunagar will be divided among the city and rural police station limits.

Portions of the rural police station limits have been brought under the bordering police station limits in the city. For example, areas coming under Oomachikulam will be appended to Tallakulam police limits; those coming under Othakadai will be included in Pudur limits; those under Karuppayoorani in Anna Nagar; and those falling under Silaiman will be included in Teppakulam limits.

Parts of police station limits outside the Corporation limits have been added to the nearest rural police stations. Rural parts of Koodal Pudur police station now go to Alanganallur police station; those of Avaniapuram with Silaiman police station; and those of Tirunagar with Austinpatti police station.
