Madurai churns out 44 State ranks

With an overall pass percentage of 94.20, Madurai revenue district, comprising Madurai, Melur and Usilampatti educational districts, recorded a marginal increase of 1.08 per cent.

A record number of 44 State ranks have been secured by students of the district in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations, results of which were announced on Thursday.

With an overall pass percentage of 94.20, Madurai revenue district, comprising Madurai, Melur and Usilampatti educational districts, recorded a marginal increase of 1.08 per cent when compared to last year’s pass percentage of 93.12.

D. Sasikala of Lord Venkateshwara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, T. Kallupatti, bagged the State first rank, along with 40 other students in the State, with a total of 499 marks.

S. Amritha from CEOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School; T. Manasha from Government Higher Secondary School, Melur; B. Poonkuzhali from St Joseph’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School; and A. Varsha from Sri Sundareswara Vidya Sala Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Melur, bagged State second rank with 498 marks.

Nineteen students bagged the State third rank with a score of 497 marks.

G. Chandra, Principal and Secretary, Lord Venkateswara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, which bagged two State ranks, attributed the good performance of the students to regular study sessions undertaken before and after classes at school.

Of the 471 schools where students took the SSLC examinations, 177 schools secured a pass percentage of 100.

Overall, there were 31 district toppers, including students who took French and Sanskrit as their second language. The toppers were honoured by Collector L. Subramanian.

As in the previous years, with 95.90 percentage, girls prevailed over boys (90.66).

5,556 centums

As many as 5,556 students scored centum in Science. Teachers said that Science examination was easier this year, the reason why many could perform exceptionally well. Usilampatti educational districts recorded 96.17 per cent, Madurai 93.85 and Melur 93.42 per cent.
