A week after the model code of conduct came into force, flying squads have intensified vehicle checks in the Madurai Lok Sabha constituency.

Following information that unaccounted cash was being carried in public transports, the squads on Saturday carried out surprise checks in government buses at various places, including Tallakulam, Narimedu, Kuruvikaran Salai, Mattuthavani bus stand and Anna Nagar in the city limits and its peripheries.

A revenue official said that since only two-wheelers and cars were being checked for the past few days, buses had become an easy mode of transport for those who wanted to carry cash without being subjected to checks.

“When the officials got a tip-off that persons chose the public transport, the squads were alerted to intercept public vehicles at random in their jurisdiction,” a Deputy Tahsildar said, and added that only those who carried bags were subjected to examination. However, no money was seized during the raids, the official added.

Collector L. Subramanian said that the Election Commission’s rules were explained to political parties. Any complaint received would be thoroughly looked into and action taken. So far, there were no major issues, he said in reply to a question.
