Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association will stage a protest in Madurai on Monday demanding uniform power supply across the State and to put an end to unscheduled power cuts.
In a statement, association president V.S. Manimaran said that the frequent disruptions in power were hitting the industrial production. At a meeting of trade and industry bodies on October 8, it was decided to go ahead with a protest against the power cuts. Besides pressing for Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, the associations were also demanding the expeditious commissioning of various power plants being built in the State. They also urged the State government to buy power from captive power plants owned by High Tension Industries (HT). The Government could buy around 3,000 MW from them, albeit at a higher price.
Spinners Association
The Madurai Spinners Association has also called upon the State Government to treat all consumers equally without any preference for those living in Chennai.
In a statement issued here, association president P.S. Sivaprasad said that many members of the association, which represents 110 units employing 20,000 persons, were facing the threat of becoming sick and getting classified as ‘non-performing assets.’
Despite power cuts having reduced working time, the units have to pay the wages for all three shifts to retain them. The association urged the Government to buy power from other States and also encourage solar power projects.
