A minor portion of the Rajagopuram on the East Chithirai Street of the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here was damaged when lightning struck it around 8.45 p.m. on Thursday.

“The structure has suffered no damage on the impact of the lightning,” said Joint Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and temple Executive Officer P. Jeyaraman.

Only a small area of plastering of the tower, which has a lightning arrester, had fallen off, he said.

However, police said the gravity of the damage was yet to be ascertained as the heavy downpour continued till late in the night.

Besides, there was frequent lightning.

Devotees would be allowed through the tower on Friday after ensuring that the structure did not suffer any major damage, the police noted.
