Laparoscopic surgery more effective, say experts

Laparoscopic surgery is the best option for patients, especially working women, since it requires small incisions and reduces hospital stay, according to gynaecologists and surgeons who participated at a workshop on Gynaecology Laparoscopy here on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Divyesh Shukla, consultant, Vadodara Institute of Minimal Access Surgery, Gujarat, said the current surgical scenario needed technology to improve the outcome of the procedure without complications.

The speakers said through endoscopic surgeries, patients experienced less pain and could get back to their normal routine in less than a day’s time without any complications, unlike open surgeries, which warranted some more time for the patient to get back to the normal routine.

On availability of Laparoscopy at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) here, T. Uma Devi, Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, said laparoscopy was performed on patients with infertility for diagnosis. The hospital recorded three or four cases of laparoscopic surgeries a week.

At the GRH, where the occupancy rate was quite high, such procedures would be of much help, she added.

Most of intestinal surgeries could be performed using the laparoscopic or “minimally invasive” method, a specialised technique for performing surgery.

Hysteroscopy was a procedure performed on women for treating abnormal vaginal bleeding and removal of fibroids (tumours), doctors said.

Dr. Devi said the hospital would soon procure equipment to perform hysteroscopy procedures.

S. Padma, Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC), and Ramesh Ardhanari, MMHRC, also spoke at the workshop.
