People in general should be treated equally to ward off social discrimination in the society, A. Alexander Mohan, Inspector General of Police, Social Justice and Human Rights, Chennai, said.
Presiding over the Social Justice Mass Awareness Campaign here on Tuesday, he said the people were suppressed due to caste discrimination and such principles should be dispensed with at all costs.
“Men are born free but they have to lead a balanced life with control and a sense of righteousness. Such problems of discrimination occur only due to lack of education, lack of tolerance. People should lead a life with the tendency of give and take for a meaningful and peaceful life,” he said.
First thing is people should be aware of their rights.
S. Mary Ansalam, Additional District Judge, Fast Track Court – I, Tuticorin said parents had to bear the responsibility for sending their children below the age group of fourteen to fireworks and cracker manufacturing units in Sivakasi and Kovilpatti.
The State Government was providing a series of welfare measures to the children by providing free education, free bus pass, uniform, text books to give equal education.
Through education, a lot of transformational changes could happen for the prosperity of the people. The principles of education aids in taking forward the society towards a decent living. The police should ensure that the accused are produced before the court in 24-hours time to safeguard basic human rights, she added.
Earlier, D. Ravichandran, DRO and Collector (in charge), flagged off an awareness rally during the campaign, which commenced near Ambedkar statue.
Students from various schools took part in the rally which passed through the thoroughfares and concluded at the programme venue.
