The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), which has so far released Rs. 20 crore for the construction of concrete houses under its neighbourhood development programme, handed over a cheque for another Rs. 55 crore to the District Collector, M. Karunakaran, on Tuesday.

Site director of the KKNPP R.S. Sundar handed over the cheque . The sum was credited to the District Rural Development Agency’s account through RTGS mode on December 5 itself.

Speaking to reporters after receiving the cheque, Mr. Karunakaran said the villages around the KKNPP were being provided better infrastructure and housing at an estimated cost of Rs. 500 crore.

A sum of Rs. 300 crore would be spent for the 10,000 houses to be constructed in two phases. A sum of Rs. 3 lakh would be spent for each house having a plinth area of around 325 square feet.

The beneficiaries could make minor alterations in the proposed design of their house for which they could get cement and steel at lesser price.
