In a major operation, PWD engineers removed thick growth of Prosopis juliflora (karuvelam tree) in many pockets in and around the city.

According to a press release issued from the district administration, following the High Court directive, the officials had swung into action to remove the trees.

The areas covered included a whopping 700 acres from Keelamathur to NH 7 bridge, from Kochadai to Anna Nagar and from Thenur Kodimangalam to Vaigai riverbed. With the help of earthmovers and other heavy equipment, the karuvelam trees were cleared.

Now, the team is working in the area between Anna Nagar and Virahanoor Ring Road junction from Tuesday. So far, juliflora had been removed from a 10-km stretch.

The officials had identified the locations after the court had ordered clearing of juliflora, a which is a threat to the environment.
