Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi on Sunday preferred to be silent on his son and Madurai MP M.K. Alagiri, but lashed out at his political arch rival and AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa.
At a time when Mr. Alagiri was hitting the headlines after he was expelled from the DMK, the cadres and party functionaries expected the veteran leader to talk about his Madurai-based son.
Meeting
Addressing a public meeting at Obulapadithurai here on Sunday evening on the bank of Vaigai river, he said when the DMK was in power, there was power shutdown for just two hours.
However, the media gave an impression that the State was in utter darkness then. For her part, Ms. Jayalalithaa had demanded his resignation.
“Today, when the power cut stretches for long, even up to 10 hours in many parts of the State, the media largely remains silent. I don’t want Ms. Jayalalithaa to step down and escape from responsibility now, but hope she faced the disproportionate case without seeking any more adjournments in the courts,” he said.
“If one can buy immovable properties with just one-rupee salary, the secret should be shared with all...This may help people of Tamil Nadu also to become crorepatis,” he said. Reading out from a list, Mr. Karunanidhi said Ms. Jayalalithaa owned grapes garden in Hyderabad, bungalows in Siruthavoor and Neelankarai, and lands in Kancheepuram, Srivaikuntam, Kanyakumari and other places.
DMK general secretary K. Anbazhagan had moved the court against the AIADMK chief two decades ago. Instead of facing the proceedings, Ms. Jayalalithaa dodged the hearings under some pretext or the other, Mr. Karunanidhi said.
Earlier, senior party leader Durai Murugan lashed out at Ms. Jayalalithaa on a wide range of issues, including water disputes.
Candidates from southern districts sought the good wishes of the DMK president at the meeting. V. Velusamy is contesting from the Madurai Lok Sabha constituency.
