The Madras High Court Bench here on Thursday ordered notice to School Education Secretary on a public interest litigation petition filed by former Minister P. Kakkan’s grandson V. Sarasukumar (42) to repair the dilapidated buildings of his grandfather’s alma mater, a Panchayat Union Primary School at Thumbaipatti in Melur taluk.

A Division Bench of Justices K.K. Sasidharan and G.R. Swaminathan directed a government counsel to obtain instructions from the secretary by July 24. Stating that the school was in a very bad shape, the petitioner also sought for a direction to the State to construct new buildings and supply adequate water to the toilets in the school.

He claimed that the officials concerned failed to give a new lease of life to the school despite its poor condition having been reported in newspapers and also being taken to their notice through representations submitted by him.
