The district police have arrested two persons, including a juvenile, who had robbed a woman of her gold chain at knifepoint at Mahatma Gandhi Nagar here on Monday.

The police identified them as R. Manobharathi (22) and a polytechnic student (juvenile), both from Sellur area.

The police said that D. Inbamalar (34) of Mahatma Gandhi Nagar was walking on the Thamarai Malar Street to pick up her child from school at around 2 p.m. on Monday. Suddenly, a youth flashed a knife and threatened her to hand over her gold chain.

Even before the shocked woman could raise an alarm, the accused tried to pull her five-sovereign gold chain. However, since she held on to the chain, a part of it was yanked by the accused. He took to heels and jumped on a motorbike readily waiting for him and the duo escaped from the scene.

The woman sustained bleeding injuries on her hand.

However, the police got vital clues about the youths and they traced them late in the night, Inspector of Police (Oomachikulam) M. Periyasamy said.

Interrogation revealed that Manobharathi had stolen the motorbike from Tallakulam a couple of days back. He had promised to give the bike to the student if he helped him in chain snatching, the Inspector said. In the last two days they had been roaming around to strike a vulnerable victim and they landed at Thamarai Malar Street. The police have recovered two knives and the stolen motorbike, he added.

The arrest of the polytechnic student comes close on the heels to the city police arresting an engineering college student from Theni in similar chain snatching incidents at Koodal Nagar and Karimedu last week.
