“Somebody who knew victim’s movements planned the robbery”

A special team of police personnel has gone to Aranthangi in Pudukottai district in connection with the robbery case reported in the city on Monday.

An armed gang in a car stopped a gold jeweller, C. Dakshinamoorthy of CMR Road, who was carrying a bag containing 2.6 kilograms of gold jewels and going to Mattuthavani bus stand on a two-wheeler, attacked him with an aruval and robbed him of the valuables in broad daylight. The gang then escaped from the spot.

According to the victim’s confession, he was going to Mattuthavani bus stand to board a bus to Aranthangi to transact some business. After the attack by the gang, he was admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital, where he is recovering now.

A senior police officer monitoring the case said a team of police personnel had gone to Aranthangi after gathering vital inputs from the jeweller and from others known to him. “Normally, Mr.Dakshniamoorthy used to visit Aranthangi on specific days. It is suspected that some persons who had knowledge about his movements have committed the crime. But, the victim is not fully cooperating with the police,” a police officer said.

Though the jeweller had given contradictory statements to the police, the police had not neglected any information, the officers added.

Special police teams were tracking the call data details of some mobile phones. Though the police had not got any big lead so far, the interrogation appeared to be in the right direction. A witness had seen a vehicle fleeing from the scene of crime on the CMR Road . “The investigators are studying the video footage obtained from the vicinity for vital clues,” the officer pointed out.
