In a daring incident, an armed gang brutally assaulted a 50-year-old city-based jeweller and robbed him of gold jewels weighing 2.6 kilograms in broad daylight here on Monday.
The police said the victim, C. Dakshinamoorthy, was on his way to Mattuthavani bus stand on a two-wheeler at around 8.30 a.m. to board a bus to Aranthangi, carrying a bag containing the jewels.
The incident reportedly happened near his house on CMR Road. According to the victim, an unidentified gang came in a car and intercepted him. Immediately, the gang members alighted from the vehicle, and attacked him with a sickle on his head and abdomen. As soon as the victim collapsed on the ground, the robbers grabbed the bag kept in the pouch of the bike and fled the scene.
After sometime, Mr.Dakshinamoorthy managed to reach his home, and informed his relatives of the incident. He was admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital.
It is said that Mr.Dakshinamoorthy is into the business of resale of old jewellery.
The robbers must have kept a watch on his movements, the police said, adding they were looking into business motive and other angles.
Samanth Rohan Rajendra, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), and others visited the victim at the hospital. Teppakulam police have registered a case of dacoity and are on the lookout for the culprits.
It may be recalled that in October last, a gang robbed a businessman of Rs.15 lakh in cash on Kamarajar Salai. The police arrested one person in this connection, but he allegedly committed suicide in a police station.
