Jayalalithaa arrest: Girl who attempted immolation dies

A 17-year-old girl, M. Nagalakshmi, near Elumalai, >who attempted self immolation on Sunday in protest against the arrest of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, died on Tuesday.

Police sources said that the girl succumbed to the burns at the Government Rajaji hospital here at around 9.15 a.m.

The girl, who was studying 12th standard at the Government Girls' Higher Secondary School, was anguished over the arrest of Ms. Jayalalithaa.

The police had said that the girl was an admirer of Ms. Jayalalithaa, who had introduced welfare schemes like free distribution of bicycles and laptops to higher secondary school students. The girl had received a bicycle under the government scheme.

When the family members were away for work, the girl had set herself afire at her house in Vangi Narayanapuram near Elumalai. She had suffered 80 per cent burns, the police said.
