Stress laid on peace, mental balance on International Day of Yoga

Marking the International Day of Yoga, many educational institutions and service organisations conducted yoga demonstration and meditation sessions in the city on Thursday.

Addressing participants at the event conducted by Brahmakumaris Ishwara Viswa Vidyalayam at Anna Maaligai, the seat of Madurai Corporation, Principal District Judge S. Sathikumar said that yoga gave much needed peace and mental balance. About 1,000 rajayoga practitioners performed joint yoga and meditation on the occasion. Mr. Sathikumar said that at a time when there was tension and chaos around us, yoga not only gave peace but also helped to lead a disciplined life. It was essential to teach yogasanas to children and we should feel proud today as yoga had been recognised globally, Mr. Sathikumar said and lauded the efforts of Brahmakumaris in disseminating the importance of yoga and meditation to people across the country.

In her address, Madurai Region Director BK. Meenakshi said that rajayoga gave immense relief to practitioners. Brahmakumaris coordinator BK Uma said, “We have to ensure that every individual practised yoga and benefited from it.”

Corporation Deputy Commissioner P. Manivannan said that in the modern day, majority of the people were attracted towards fast food and had access to modern gadgets. Practising yoga would ensure longevity of life and self-discipline.

On Race Course Grounds, Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao said that yoga helped students to focus and keep free from tension, especially, during examinations and interviews. A three-day awareness campaign on yoga, organised by the Field Outreach Bureau, concluded at Government Higher Secondary School, Chathirapatti. The camp was organised at E. V. R. Nagammaiyar Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School and Thiru. Vi. Ka. Corporation Higher Secondary School, Madurai; Government High School, Kodimangalam; Sakthi Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Melur, and the Chathirapatti school. V. Sathish Raghavan, City Health Officer, delivered the valedictory address. K. Harini spoke on the importance of yoga. A yoga competition was also held for students on the occasion.

More than a 1,000 people, including Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple’s Fit Person Karumuttu T. Kannan, took part in yoga demonstration organised by Ministry of AYUSH’s Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy in association with Madurai Manavalakkalai Mandram Trust at Teppakulam in the morning.
