The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K. Sivan visited his home town Sarakalvilai in Kanniyakumari district on Saturday evening.
He was accorded a warm welcome ahead of a felicitation programme held in a public ground.
As he stepped into a Government School at Sarakalvilai, his alma mater, he fondly recalled his school days.
In his address, the ISRO Chairman said efforts were on to launch the GSAT -11 communication satellite into orbit within two months.
Currently, 45 more communication satellites are required to meet the demands of growing science, information and technology in India.
Meanwhile, he took pride referring to the launch of 104 satellites in a single rocket last year. The world was taken aback by India’s achievements, he said.
While talking to reporters, he said the ISRO has experimented a device called Navic, a satellite navigation system to benefit fishermen, locate suitable fishing grounds and identify locations to avoid crossing territorial waters.
Earlier, Collector Sajjan Singh R. Chavan and Superintendent of Police N. Sreenatha honoured the ISRO Chairman. Besides, MLAs took part in the felicitation programme. S.T. Hindu College also held a felicitation programme where the ISRO Chairman opened a renovated entrance gate, sources said.
