Students from various educational institutions thronged the District Collectorate on Monday alleging irregularities in the distribution of free laptops.

This included students who had passed out of Madurai Aruppukottai Nadar Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Subramaniya Swamy Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Sourashtra Girls’ Higher Secondary School and students of Government Polytechnic College, Melur.

“A total of 50 students from our batch were not given laptops. The school says that we are not eligible for it as we are from the self-finance stream but we have received other welfare assistances of the government,” a student from Capron Hall Girls’ Higher Secondary School said.

As many as 100 students from the Government Polytechnic College in Melur claimed that they were not being given laptops since they had secured admission to the institute through the lateral entry.

A senior official at the Collectorate said that the petitions received from the students would be forwarded to the District Education Department which would look into the issue.

“Whether it is a case of discrepancy on part of the educational institutions or the non-eligibility of the students, officials from the Education Department will inform them after reviewing their petitions,” the official said.
