S. Venugopal, Inspector of Police (Crime), Srivilliputtur, has been placed under suspension in connection with a graft charge pending against him in a court in Dharmapuri district.

Anand Kumar Somani, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Madurai Range), ordered his suspension on Monday after the Inspector was charge-sheeted in the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Dharmapuri in the 2008 bribery case.

The suspension order was passed since his continuing in the post of Inspector could “pose hindrance” to the proceedings of the case, a police source said.

The source said Venugopal was trapped by Vigilance and Anti-Corruption sleuths in October 2008 based on a complaint filed by a woman, Palaniammal, that the Inspector reportedly demanded from her ₹3,000 as bribe to amicably settle an issue.

Venugopal, who was then suspended from service, joined duty again after the suspension was revoked in 2013, the police source also said.
