The Madras High Court Bench here has ordered for an inquiry into the alleged fraud to the tune of several crores in 22 Handloom Weavers Cooperative societies in Theni district.

While admitting a PIL, Justice Chitra Venkatraman and Justice M Duraisamy said the charges levelled by the petitioner are serious in nature and needed to inquired and attended to urgently and ordered special government pleader to find out the nature of fraud, by conducting an inquiry and file a reply latest by October 30th.

The petitioner submitted that the societies had incurred a loss of Rs. 10.08 lakh due to malpractices and irregularities committed by the executive officers and inspectors of cooperative societies.

The officials and inspectors alone were responsible for the fraud to the tune of about Rs 2.50 crore.

The petitioner submitted that money had been drawn in fake names under rural employment opportunity programme and action should be taken against them under Tamil Nadu Cooperative Society Act.
