The Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital Dean, K. Sithy Athiya Munavarah’s, dream of establishing a state-of-the-art infertility centre on TVMCH premises with the contribution of philanthropists got realised on Thursday when Collector M. Karunakaran laid the foundation stone for the ₹ 75.90 lakh-facility.

Of this whopping sum, Tamil scholar Ra.Pi. Sethu Pillai Trust has contributed ₹ 25 lakh for establishing the infertility centre, which has now become a tool to spin quick, but huge sum of money utilising the demand from desperate childless couples.

State’s share

Since a philanthropist has donated ₹ 25 lakh, the State Government, under the self-sufficiency scheme, has chipped in with its share of an additional ₹ 50 lakh to realise the Dean’s 30-month-long dream.

While the 2,581-square-foot ground floor will have a reception counter, in-patient section, Obstetrics and Gynaecology out-patient section and semen collection centre, the first floor with similar area will have an operation theatre, steam bath room, laboratory, investigation section for men, fertility section and post-operative care ward.

Dr. Karunakaran said the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital infertility centre would offer a range of services and costly medicines free of cost to patients, particularly from poor background.

“It will be ready within a year to serve poor couples desperately waiting for long to have their children,” the Collector noted after laying the foundation stone.

Boon

“The upcoming infertility centre will be a boon to poor childless patients as most of the private hospitals and infertility centres are fleecing exorbitant money in the guise of helping these desperate couples realize their dream of having a child,” said Dr. Sithy.

Rajya Sabha MP Vijila Sathyananth, former Dean Thulasiram, vice-principal of Tirunelveli Medical College Kannan, Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, TVMCH, Ramalakshmi and representatives of Sollin Selvar Ra.Pi. Sethu Pillai Trust were present.
