The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has slapped a fine on a small-scale unit at Abiramam in Ramanathapuram district for having indulged in power theft.

It is suspected that the unit should have indulged in the crime for more than a year and must have stolen 2,76,742 units.

“The unit indulged in power theft by bypassing connections to the meter so that energy consumption readings could not be recorded fully.

The unit was asked to pay compounding charges of Rs.5.6 lakh which the owner paid to avoid criminal case,” said K. Ravichandran, Executive Engineer of the enforcement wing of Madurai Division.

The offender was also asked to pay an extra levy of Rs.31.30 lakh. “The unit could not pay the money and so their electricity connections were snapped,” Mr. Ravichandran added.
