The Southern Region of India Post has been issuing proof of address card which people could make use of, Postmaster General B. Selvakumar said.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Selvakumar said that people aged above 18 years could apply in the prescribed form to the Head Post Offices and select sub-post offices in the region. The cost of the application form was Rs. 10.

The application should contain the applicant's photograph, details of address, mobile phone number, date of birth and blood group. An Inspector from the Head Post Office would inspect the house and verify the details in the application form and issue the card within a month of submission of application.

The card would also contain the signature of the card-holder and the issuing officer. It would be valid for three years. The card would be helpful for rural people who migrate to towns or cities.

New pension scheme

Mr. Selvakumar said that India Post had been declared a point of presence for the new pension scheme introduced by the Union Government.

Not only Government employees, but also any individual could derive benefit from the scheme. People should invest a minimum of Rs. 6,000 a year.

The payment could be done on a monthly basis with a minimum investment of Rs. 500. Anyone in the age group of 18 to 55 years could join the scheme and choose any of the six fund managers. The fund managers could be changed once a year.

On achieving 60 years, part re-payment would be made as a lump sum and the reminder be taken for paying monthly pension.

Sale of gold

India Post would be selling 24-carat gold coins in the denominations of 0.5 gm, one gram, five gm and 8 gm. “For the first time, the coins will have the logo of India Posts on their both sides. The coins manufactured by Valcambi, Switzerland, come with the guarantee for quality and purity,” he said.

India Post was offering an additional one per cent — 6 per cent — discount on the gold coins bought till May 31, in connection with Akshya Tritiya, he said.

Director of Postal Services V.S. Jayasankar was present.
