An Income Tax Officer and another person were convicted for two years by a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) special court here on corruption charges.
The Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI had registered a case against D. Soundarapandian, the then Income Tax Officer, Dindigul, and P. Karuppasamy of Oddanchathiram on the charge that they had allegedly entered into a conspiracy to cheat the Income Tax Department in 2006.
It was found that the officer had dishonestly and fraudulently concealed in his survey report the actual expenses incurred by Karuppasamy while constructing a residential complex in Dindigul.
By abusing his official position, the IT officer had facilitated Karuppasamy to evade payment of tax to the tune of little over Rs.22 lakh, including interest, it came to light.
This, the CBI sleuths said, had resulted in wrongful loss to the IT department and thus a wrongful gain to the accused. After investigation, the CBI had filed a charge sheet against the accused under Sections 120-B r/w 420, 201 of IPC and Section 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
After hearing the case, Additional District Judge and (Special Judge for CBI cases) M. M. Krishnan pronounced judgement convicting both Soundarapandian and Karuppusamy and also sentenced them to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years.
The Judge also imposed a total fine of Rs.30,000 on them, a CBI press release issued on Friday said.
