The “elite” government school students – bright but hailing from poor background, who were offered special coaching by the district administration have come out with flying colours for the fourth successive year with 63 of 68 students scoring 1,000 and more out of 1,200 marks in the Plus Two examinations, results of which were announced on Friday.
Four years ago, former District Collector K. Nanthakumar had introduced the ‘elite school’ concept to help the poor government school students to seek admission to professional courses after identifying their talents based on marks scored in class X examinations and his successor S. Natarajan gave it a new impetus.
Last year, but for three students, all the 45 students had secured four digit marks, thanks to the free special coaching and residential accommodation.
This year too, only five of 68 students could not get 1,000 or more marks with three of them missing the figure by a whisker.
Eight students have scored more than 1,150 marks, 17 of them more than 1,100 and less than 1,150 and 38 students more than 1,000 and less than 1,100 marks, school sources said.
Centum
Ten students have scored centum in maths, while one in chemistry.
Three students missed centum in physics and two in biology by one mark. The 68 students included 44 girls.
As many as 30 students have secured more than 191 cut off and 22 of them more than 195 and above for admission to engineering courses. As per last year’s calculation, 18 students have secured more than 191 cut off and eight of them 195 and above for admission to medical courses.
Last year, nine students secured MBBS admission in government colleges and NEET has come as a stumbling block for these Tamil medium students this year. They could not prepare for the qualifying test due to non availability of study materials in Tamil on the one side and experts to coach them on the other.
