The Department of Environment, Government of Tamil Nadu, and National Green Corps conducted World Environment Day events here on Saturday and organised a rally by school students to spread awareness. Students took out a rally from Tamukkam Grounds to Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School to create awareness of the importance of conserving the environment.

Later, an awareness programme was held at the school for the students.

Speaking at the programme, Collector L. Subramanian said that National Green Corps units had been functioning in schools across the district to create awareness of environmental issues among children.

“Madurai and Melur educational districts have 100 schools each with National Green Corps and Usilampatti educational district has 50 schools with National Green Corps. Every school has at least 30 to 50 students who are part of it,” he said.

Minister for Cooperation ‘Sellur’ K. Raju distributed prizes to the top 10 schools with regard to the functioning of the National Green Corps there.

Special Representative of the Tamil Nadu Government in New Delhi S.T.K. Jakkaiyan also took part in the event.
