The second edition of the annual Rotary child care conference ‘Ilanthalir’ organised here by the Rotary Club of Tirunagar was inaugurated on Friday.
Delivering the keynote address during the inaugural function, V.K. Sanjeevi, General Manager, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Madurai, termed the programme as unique.
“The BSNL always helps those carrying out such social activities. These kinds of events will help the students develop soft skills. Teachers should conduct such programmes in their schools,” he said.
Creating such opportunities would help bring out the hidden talents of students. They should be equipped with the right kind of skills to face colleges and the job market, he said.
The world was now changing from an industry-based society to a knowledge-based one, thereby providing opportunities for India, which is being powered by the Information Technology sector.
Mr. Sanjeevi said that to become a superpower in the future, human resources were vital. Hence, the present-day students should develop soft skills.
Speaking earlier, club president C. Senthil Kumar said that this was the silver jubilee year for the Rotary Club of Tirunagar. The programme would be spread over three days, he added.
S. Aravind, conference chairman, said that academic lessons alone would not suffice and students also develop other skills to excel.
N. Ramasaamy, conference secretary, said that contests such as painting, elocution, dance, fancy dress, essay writing and poetry would be held in both Tamil and English languages. New events have been added to hone the soft skill of students. Around 1,500 students were expected to participate.
Speaking after inaugurating the conference, A. Purushothaman, District Governor, traced the history of the international organisation and its objectives.
