IAS officer gets 2-year jail term

A Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) court here on Wednesday sentenced a former Commissioner of Social Welfare Department, Tamil Nadu, to undergo two years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of graft charges.

Subramanian, a suspended IAS officer, was the Commissioner of the Social Welfare Department in 2002. According to the prosecution, he had allegedly visited Madurai to collect a bribe from his subordinate in 2002.

Acting on a tip-off, the DVAC sleuths conducted a surprise raid in the Circuit House where he was staying, and recovered unaccounted cash of Rs 1.25 lakh. A complaint was registered and the trial was conducted by the DVAC court here.In his order, Judge P Karunanidhi held Mr. Subramanian guilty of corruption. The judge sentenced him to undergo two-year jail term and directed him to pay a fine of Rs. 2,000.
