Hundreds of devotees thronged Lord Sundareswarar's shrine in the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here on Thursday evening to witness the coronation of the Lord.
The coronation is performed during the Tamil month of Aavani (August-September). The Lord was adorned with vastram (attire) and jewels were placed in front of the sanctum sanctorum. The priests poured holy water on the crown and then placed it on the Lord's head.
The ceremony was performed between 7.02 p.m. and 7.10 p.m. The devotees raised their hands in veneration, to pay their respects to the divine couple.
Sceptre
After adorning the Lord with the headgear, priests placed the silver sceptre near Lord Sundareswarar (Lord Siva). The sceptre was later handed over to Chairman of the board of trustees of the temple Karumuttu T. Kannan to be taken around the shrines of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar.
Temple trustees M. Balasubramanian and S. Rajaram took part in the event besides Executive Officer R. Padmanaban and senior president of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry S. Rethinavelu.
