A human chain was formed as part of an awareness camp on conserving water and protection of the environment here in the city from Rajah Muthiah Mandram to District Collectorate to mark the occasion of World Water Day 2010, which falls on March 22.

Joint effort

The human chain was jointly organised by Change Management Group (CMG) Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board, Education Department, Madurai, Environment Club and All Melur, Kottampatti Union Presidents.

A.Dhanush, Chief Engineer, Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board, said that CMG TWAD along with Education Department and people of Melur and Kottampatti panchayat unions will be celebrating World Water Day at the respective villages.

During the day, awareness activities and competitions will be held for school children of primary, secondary and higher secondary levels. The competitions include essay, painting, elocution, dance and drama competition. The topics include, Prevention of Pollution of Water, Protection of Water and Environmental Hygiene and Health.


Awareness activities like the need to keep the water tanks of schools clean, installing taps, cleaning up the school premises, planting tree saplings, to have boards depicting the need to keep our environment clean at Panchayat offices and village squares. The event will also see people administering pledge to conserve water.

K.Sakthivel, Chief Engineer, Madurai Corporation, P.Ashok Kumar, Chairman, District Panchayat and S.Selvaraj, Coordinator, Environment Club, Madurai were among the others who spoke on the occasion.

School students and National Service Scheme volunteers from various colleges took part in the human chain.
