A series of rallies and awareness campaigns marked the World Heart Day celebration, which falls on the last Sunday of September every year.

Meenakshi Mission Hospital here organised a walkathon on Saturday to mark the World Heart Day from the Walker’s Club in K.K. Nagar to the Wakf Board College.

Abhay Kumar Singh, IG (South Zone), flagged off the rally. Dr. R. Sivakumar and N. Ganesan, senior consultants from the hospital’s department of Cardiology, said that over seventeen million people in the world die due to heart ailments every year.

Walking half an hour every day will reduce the risk of heart ailments in people above 35 years, they said.

Devadoss Multispeciality Hospital conducted an awareness rally here on Sunday to mark the World Heart Day.

Krishna Moorthy, former chairman of CII, Dr. Sathish Devadoss, medical director and Dr. Hema Sathish, managing director of Devadoss Hospital flagged off the rally which started from Thamaraithotti and ended at the hospital.

Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Madurai organised a walkathon from Race Course to Tallakulam on Sunday.

A press release from the hospital said that more than 600 persons took part in the rally which was organised under the theme “Take the road to a healthy heart.”

The hospital also offered discount to those who underwent a cardiology check up.
